Receiving and allocating payments from Clients is one of the most important aspects of most legal transactions, but it can also be one of the most difficult.

Clients will make payments to their law firm for many reasons, including a payment on account, a deposit, a retainer or in payment of your bill. When this happens, they might send you a cheque, perhaps transfer funds straight in to your bank account, or call you to make payment over the phone.

In the case of a cheque, you then have to pay that in to your account and of course wait for it to clear. If it’s a bank transfer then you have to hope that they will have used the correct bank details and paid you the correct amount. If they’re calling you to make a phone payment, then of course they are limited to office hours.
