Cloud or not?
The Insight Legal System is a Microsoft Windows Application.
This means that it needs to run in an Windows environment, it doesn’t necessarily need to be on a PC running Windows or with everything on a traditional LAN (Local Area Network)- although the system will run happily in that environment, there are plenty of other platforms and deployment options.
We chose to develop a Windows application as these still give by far the best user experience. Although great improvements have been and continue to be made with web applications, the Windows Platform still gives a much smother and more complete interface than a web based system. It also makes it possible to interface directly with the other applications that a user might have on their system such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. When web applications have improved to the point where they rival a windows application, we will make the transition.
There was a time when Windows applications could be time-consuming and difficult to install and update. This may still be true of some applications, however, the Insight Legal System is a click-once app. This means that to install it you simply go to a web page and click an Install button. Once installed the system will automatically update every time there is a new version. It really is that simple and quick to install and update.
What if I want to use a Mac or run it on my iPad? Currently, the only way to run the system on a Mac is to use a product like Hyper-V, Bootcamp or Parallels to run Windows on the Mac. Optionally, you could run Insight and even your entire desktop in a cloud based hosted environment. This option is covered in the next section.
Possible implementation Scenarios
Lots of users need to be able to access the system remotely. Whether it is users spread across a number of locations or home workers, being able to access the system remotely is often a requirement.
There are several ways to achieve this depending on how the system is implemented. If you are using Microsoft Azure, then it is simple, Insight can be installed on the Windows PC and as long as there is an internet connection, it will run just fine. If the database is stored in the office, then a VPN connection between the remote computer and the office will be all that is needed. It there are going to be a number of remote workers or lots of locations then an entirely hosted solution might be the best. There are other options and we would be very happy to discuss these options with you.
Rather than a long list of minimum hardware requirements, it is easier to just state that Insight will run on any currently supported version of Microsoft Windows. We would recommend 7 or later and you should really have a minimum of 2Gb of RAM.

If you are utilising Microsoft Azure then you will need a good internet connection. There are good internet connections and good internet connections. The best way of assessing your potential performance is to use this link; http://www.azurespeed.com/. When you run this, you want the lines to be pretty flat and an average latency of no more than about 40ms. This tool will also let you know which data centre is the closest and best one for you to use.
